Azadi Magazine is an independent digital publication featuring commentary and opinion pieces about the politics and culture of the Indian society. The approach to the magazine combines nuanced research and multimedia design formats to inspire important conversations through the magazine website and social media channels―mainly Instagram.

The logo for the magazine is made by combining the Hindi and Urdu letters (अ and آ respectively) for the sound of ‘A’. These letters are set in the typefaces Anek Devanagari (अ) and Forma DJR Arabic (آ).

The name of the magazine ‘azadi’ meaning freedom is inspired by the concept of the magazine itself. It emphasizes the importance of free speech and freedom of expression. Additionally, ‘azadi’ is a famous slogan for many movements of dissenting voices across the subcontinent throughout history, especially the Kashmiri freedom movement in more recent times.

This magazine was an extension of an initial project, where I had to choose a subject to create content entries which would be distributed through a digital publishing platform. My chosen platform was Instagram, mainly because the platform exposes the content to a wider global audience, which was the aim of this project concept.

Featured below are the initial editorials designed for Instagram posts. The visual direction was bold with highly contrasting colors and simple and easy to read typography. The images were edited using Adobe Photoshop and the editorials were made using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator.

These images later became the thumbnails for the website’s article section.

The wireframe prototype of the website is above. The final website is made with Jekyll static site generator using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The code files for the smae can be found on GitHub– https://github.com/devyani-13/azadi. The final website was then deployed using Netlify.
